...Error occured while reconnecting X: to \\SERVER\DATA

Trouble while accessing mapped drives.

1st to check is if system does not have G letter assigned to local drive. If that is the case you either have to change letter for mapped drive or change local drive letter from Computer Management (right click on My Computer or Computer and Manage) > Storage > Disk Management. When you right click on the drive there will be an option to change the letter.

If this has not helped, find out which system is your master browser first, go to DOS box on the local machine and type these two

nbtstat -RR
nbtstat -R

At that point you master browser should recognize your new connection.

If the PC is now yelling about wrong username and password, go to Control Panel > Users (or Users accounts > Manage User Accounts) > Advanced tab > Manage Passwords button and remove passwords for network shares your end-user may have stored there.

Log-off, Log back in and it all should be working.

Best

We had a power spike. Lacie power supplies are very sensitive. They will blow out on the slightest change in power. Lacie is aware of this. We talked with them, they replaced our power supply and gave us a spare. They also stated that if we lose the new power supplies, not to worry, they will send more. After the power spike, one of our shares wouldn't connect. But luckily no damage to the power supply. Went into admin on lacie and found the share was broken. We created a new share with the same name but put 1 at the end of the new share name. We then did a reboot from the config menu. After reboot all shares were broken. Panic broke out. At that time we decided to attempt some kind of recovery plan. From the configuration menu we did a shut down. Once the unit shut down, we powered it back up. To our amazment all shares returned and the original broken share was fixed as well. The funny thing is, the new share with 1 at the end, now showed as broken.
We immediately did a full drive back up of all shares then deleted the new share that now showed as being broken and all appears to be well.

2. Use the registry editor (Regedit) to locate and expand the following registry key:

'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\COMPONENTS\DerivedData\Components\'

4. From the long list on the left, delete the following key:

'x86_microsoft.vc80.mfc_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.762_none_0c178a139ee2a7ed'.

5. Restart the computer and reinstall AVG.

The problem appears to be caused by a file being referenced in the registry that is not actually installed on the system. The AVG installer skips installing the file because the registry key suggests the file already exists.

iternity Wrote:
-------------------------------------------------------
> In order to reset LaCie Ethernet Hard Drive
> (EDmini) please follow this procedure.
>
> Read this entire message before trying to reset
> the drive.
>
> 1. Switch OFF your Ethernet disk – PRESS AND HOLD
> DOWN THE POWER BUTTON (~5seconds)
>
> 2. Switch ON your Ethernet disk but HOLD DOWN the
> power button. After a few seconds (~15seconds) the
> button's LED should begin blinking.
>
> 3. RELEASE the button. Quickly after having
> released the button (~3seconds), its LED will
> continue to blink but with a different rhythm.
>
> 4. PUSH the power button again and HOLD IT down. A
> few seconds after having pushed the button, its
> LED will continue to blink but with a third
> different rhythm.
>
> 5. You can now release the button. At this stage,
> your device should have been configured back to
> its factory default settings.
>
> IMPORTANT NOTE : Your files are not be deleted
> during this reset. To retrieve data: Recreate the
> exact same shares and you had on the drive. The
> EDmini will detect that the created share
> corresponds to an already existing folder and then
> will associate the both components.
>
> Also try to access the web admin page. If you
> can't get to that after the reset, then please
> contact your reseller directly for assistance in
> obtaining warranty service. Resellers are able to
> book a return for you by logging into the Reseller
> Zone on LaCie website.
>
> LaCie repair process does not retain data on
> drives. If you need to get the data recovered, you
> will need to send the drive in to a professional
> recovery company.

could this hard reset be used to initialize a new hard drive in edmini ?
could i buy a new (bigger) harddrive, and place it in the edmini case, hard reset it, and use is as new shared drive ?

Disabling faulty (built-in) Airport card on iMac G5

There may be a number of reasons why Mac does not boot up even with a freshly reinstalled system.
This usually indicates a hardware problem.
This particular case applies to iMac G5 20-inch with faulty AirPort card built-in into the logic board so it cannot be replaced.
Faulty AirPort results in the system not being able to boot up properly in other than Safe/Single User mode.
The only solution seems to be the logic board replacement which is quite costly.
Some users may want sacrifice the WiFi facility and keep using the computer wired (on Ethernet port).
There is no such option like disabling Airport Card permanently so the iMac becomes very difficult and almost impossible to work on.

There is a quite “nasty” but effective work around to this problem.
In general the kernel AirPort extensions have to be renamed or moved to a different location.

In order to achieve that please follow the steps below:
Please note that you do it on your own risk and we cannot be held responsible for any hardware/system failures that may occur.
If you are not familiar or comfortable with the command line please do some additional reading before continuing.

1. Start computer in Safe Mode (Press Shift key on start up)
2. Open Terminal (Applications/Utilities)
3. Make sure you have root permissions (su | password)*
4. Go to (cd /System/Library/Extensions/)
5. Move two files (AppleAirPort.kext and AppleAirPort2.kext ) out of that folder to a safe location.
i.e. (mv AppleAirPort.kext /Users/)

The same for the second file.

Restart the computer. It should boot up in normally.

* Before you can use the root mode it has to be switched on.
Go to Applications/Utilities

Open NetInfo Manager
Remove padlock so you can apply the changes

In NetInfo go to Security (top menu bar) and click Enable Root User
apply password and REMEMBER it.

Trying to get a watermark of "DRAFT" to print on every page, what I get is on alternate pages is the letters D A T and on the next page the letters R F on the next. This continues on every page. Is there anyway to get the entire word to print on every page?

When I check print preview it shows the complete word.
It doesn't matter what printer I use in the office it does it on all of them.

Uninstall Mac OS X Cisco VPN client

Since there is no uninstall available for the Cisco client this has to be done manually. Also, the install is done in the System root folders, so some items cannot be removed via the Mac graphical interface. They have to be removed via the terminal. You must be logged in as the root user.

Here are the steps to take (administrative access to the computer is needed).
Note that what you type in the command line is case sensitive, so items in upper case and in lower case have to be typed in as shown, otherwise they will not work properly.

1. Go to Applications -> Utilities and double-click on Terminal.
2. Type cd / and hit enter.
3. Type cd /usr/local/bin and hit enter.
4. Type ls and hit enter. Check to see if vpn_uninstall is in the list results.
5. If it is, then type sudo ./vpn_uninstall and hit enter. It will bring up a second line with password written. Type in your administrator password for the computer and hit enter.
6. A prompt to confirm deletion will then come up; type yes and hit enter.

Outlook 2003 Out of Office Assistant errors (command not found)

There seem to be various causes for Out of Office Assistant errors in Outlook 2003. Note that the users can still use the OoO assistant via OWA.

If the user sees "The command is not available" or something like that, to change a registry key as per KB823472:

1) Close Outlook, and make sure it's really closed.
2) Run regedit and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/11.0/Outlook/Resiliency

3) Rename Resilency to Resilency.old.
4) Start Outlook as normal, and check Out of Office Assistant.

Different issue: If Outlook claims there are not enough resources:

1) Export any rules via the Rules Wizard
2) Close Outlook, and make sure it's really closed (no icon or task running).
3) Run outlook.exe /cleanrules
4) Open the Out of Office Assistant.
5) Import rules back (if necessary).

In order to reset LaCie Ethernet Hard Drive (EDmini) please follow this procedure.

Read this entire message before trying to reset the drive.

1. Switch OFF your Ethernet disk – PRESS AND HOLD DOWN THE POWER BUTTON (~5seconds)

2. Switch ON your Ethernet disk but HOLD DOWN the power button. After a few seconds (~15seconds) the button's LED should begin blinking.

3. RELEASE the button. Quickly after having released the button (~3seconds), its LED will continue to blink but with a different rhythm.

4. PUSH the power button again and HOLD IT down. A few seconds after having pushed the button, its LED will continue to blink but with a third different rhythm.

5. You can now release the button. At this stage, your device should have been configured back to its factory default settings.

IMPORTANT NOTE : Your files are not be deleted during this reset. To retrieve data: Recreate the exact same shares and you had on the drive. The EDmini will detect that the created share corresponds to an already existing folder and then will associate the both components.

Also try to access the web admin page. If you can't get to that after the reset, then please contact your reseller directly for assistance in obtaining warranty service. Resellers are able to book a return for you by logging into the Reseller Zone on LaCie website.

LaCie repair process does not retain data on drives. If you need to get the data recovered, you will need to send the drive in to a professional recovery company.

Permissions is an area where things become corrupt, as well as the PRAM settings and firmware.

Here are the standard three things I do when things begin to go awry:
Resetting PRAM
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command (this may be the alt key if you have a non-mac keyboard)-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts three times.
6. Release the keys.
7. You will need to reset your computer clock after this procedure.

Resetting Open Firmware
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, O, and F. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-O-F keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. A grey screen with small black type will appear.
6. Type in: reset-nvram
7. Press Return key.
8. Type in: reset-all
9. Press Return key
10. Computer will restart

Single User mode
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Turn on the computer.
3. Press and hold the Command-S keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
4. A long stream of white type on a black screen will appear.
5. When the streaming text stops type in: sbin/fsck -fy
making sure there is a space is between the k and the hyphen.
6. Press Return key.
8. More white type will appear. This can go on for some time, especially if the computer has a problem.
When this stops the final text will either read "The volume Macintosh_HD (or whatever the HD is called) appears to be okay or it will report that a fault has or has not been repaired.
9. Type in reboot
10. Computer will restart

I won't go into what these various start-up commands fix, but all flush out bad things or reset system and hardware settings that may be corrupt.

And...
Your computer's battery.
If you have never replaced the lithium battery - which provides power to the Parameter memory (computer clock for example) when your computer is powered down - it may be time to do so. If the computer time is off, then it is almost certain the battery has died.

Symptoms

1.When you open Services.msc applet, the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service may not be available in the listing
2.Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service is available in Services listing, but you are unable to start the service
3.You receive the following error message while accessing the firewall settings (firewall.cpl)

Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings.
Cause

This happens due to missing or corrupt SharedAccess reg key, which represents the Windows Firewall Service.
Resolution

Download sharedaccess.reg (only for systems running Windows XP Service Pack 2) and save to Desktop. Then double-click the file to merge the contents to the registry. The Services entry will be created. Restart Windows (mandatory step, otherwise the following NETSH command will display an error message).

After restarting Windows, run this from Command Prompt (cmd.exe)

NETSH FIREWALL RESET

Launch firewall applet from Control Panel, and then configure your Windows Firewall settings.

If nothing helps, as a last-resort solution (before reinstalling Windows XP Service Pack 2), give these two commands a try. Click Start, Run and type:

rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%\inf\netrass.inf

Restart Windows, and then run this command (from Command Prompt):

NETSH FIREWALL RESET

Attempt to start Firewall applet. Start the Windows Firewall service if prompted.

Symptoms

* When you open Services.msc applet, the Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service may not be available in the listing.
* Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service is available in Services listing, but you may not be able to start the service.
* You receive the following error message while accessing the firewall settings (firewall.cpl)

Due to an unidentified problem, Windows cannot display Windows Firewall settings.

Cause

Case 1: This happens due to missing or corrupt SharedAccess registry key, which represents the Windows Firewall Service. This usually occurs if your system is infested with Virus or other Malware, or in the aftermath of Virus removal. In conjunction with the solution provided in the article, it's advisable to run a thorough clean-up of the system.

Case 2: You have Windows Live OneCare installed. Windows Live OneCare has its own Firewall that monitors both Inbound and outbound connections. Because two firewalls should not be turned on at the same time, Windows Live OneCare turns off Windows Firewall if the latter is running. [More info]

Therefore, Windows Live OneCare users can safely ignore the error message concerning Windows Firewall.
Resolution

Solution for Case 1:

Download sharedaccess.reg (only for systems running Windows XP Service Pack 2) and save to Desktop. Then double-click the file to merge the contents to the registry. The Services entry will be created. Restart Windows (mandatory step, otherwise the following NETSH command will display an error message).

After restarting Windows, execute the following command via Start, Run dialog:

CMD /K NETSH FIREWALL RESET

Launch firewall applet from Control Panel, and see if you're able to configure the Windows Firewall settings.

If the above steps do not help, as a last resort solution (before attempting to reinstall Service Pack 2), give the following commands a try:

Click Start, Run and type:

rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection Ndi-Steelhead 132 %windir%\inf\netrass.inf

The above command repaired most of the Windows Firewall settings when I tested. After running the above command, restart Windows and then run the following:

CMD /K NETSH FIREWALL RESET

Attempt to start Firewall applet. Start the Windows Firewall service when prompted.

DEP ISSUE

This only affects certain CPU's using the so called NX bit on SKYPE V1.1/2.
Additionally you MUST have SP2, OR Windows Server with SP1 to add this mod.
You need to disable data execution prevention for skype.exe - an AMD and possibly the new ’j’ version Pentium 4 that have NX implemented.
Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 3000 with SP1 . These have the DEP (Data Execution Prevention) feature that uses the so-called NX bit

Click Start button. Click Settings. Click Control Panel. Click System. When the System Properties box comes up, you'll see many tabs up at the top. Click Advanced. In the first section of the Advanced box, you'll see "Performance" and a button labelled "Settings". Click the Settings button. You'll see another window come up for Performance Options with three tabs at the top. Click "Data Execution Prevention".

By default, it's set to the top option; "Turn on DEP for essential..."
Click the circle underneath that, labelled "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:" (You'll see a message at the bottom that your pc does not support hardware DEP blah blah blah.)

Click the button on the bottom labelled "Add". A box will come up labelled Open. Click that. It will probably default to showing a view of files under your profile name. At the top, where it says "Look in:" click the down arrow next to whatever folder name is inside the box. Assuming Windows is on your C: Drive, click the C: Drive when the menu of your drive contents appears. When the C: directory appears, scroll over to the Program Files folder. Click that. Scroll again to Skype. Click that. Click the sub-folder labelled "Phone". Now, you should see "Skype.exe". Double-click that. You should now see that it is added to the DEP window as an exception. Click Apply on the bottom of the Performance Options box. Close all the System Properties Windows.

Reboot.
