Cisco Lack of memory problem - fragmentation

Hi,
I realized that from time to time Cisco 871 router with Easy VPN server on it is causing memory fragmentation problem. The only way forward was to restart it. I have scheduled restart on the device once a week, but the problem was still occurring.

From Syslog server:
Local7.Critical	Router IP Pool: Processor Free: 1017696 Cause:Memory fragmentation

It happens to be default route problem – route of the last resort. It was pointing to Fast Ethernet interface (WAN port):

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 FastEthernet4

The problem is solved by replacing this line with the following one:

ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 IP_ADDRESS_OF_THE_NEXT_HOP

CISCO IOS: How to NAT a range of ports

Usually when creating NAT rules on CISCO IOS you do enter 1 command per each NAT rule:

ip nat inside source static proto 192.168.internal_IP port 81.external_IP port extendable

ex.: ip nat inside source static udp 192.168.xx.xx 49152 81.xx.xx.xx 49152 extendable

...but what it you have 4000 ports to forward??

How do I NAT a range of ports without entering a separate NAT command for each port?

Solution taken from: dslreports

The general answer to this question is that it can't be done.

However, it is possible using a technique that was actually designed for a different purpose, an IP NAT pool. Using a NAT pool means you can specify an ACL (in this case with the port range) but you use a "pool" of a single address and specify the rotary method.

In the example below, the IP address 192.168.1.10 is the internal address that you wish to forward the range of ports to:

view plainprint?

1. ip nat pool p2p 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 type rotary
2. ip nat inside destination list 100 pool p2p
3. access-list 100 permit tcp any any range 6881 6999

ip nat pool p2p 192.168.1.10 192.168.1.10 netmask 255.255.255.0 type rotary ip nat inside destination list 100 pool p2p access-list 100 permit tcp any any range 6881 6999

Iternity's comments:
Somehow it did not sort out our problems with CISCO 800 series. But please give it a try, as later I discovered that additional FW-related access-lists should be created. You need to open forwarded ports as well:
access-list 101 permit udp any host 81.xx.xx.xx eq 49152

BT Voyager 10V behind NAT VoIP problems

when using BT VoIP services:
You may encourage FAX/Voice connection problems while NATting BT Voyager 10V device.

The 10V always shows "Broadband Voice is not connected Authentication failure" under Voice Basic Settings.

According to BT, service needs the following UDP router ports to be open: 2427, 2727, 5060, 30000-30002, 32000-36000, 49152-49193

While placing 10V behind the other routers, you need to forward these ranges to the BT Voyager's internal IP address. From our experience: you can skip 32000-36000 port range. Service works without it.

Check our other threads while looking for CISCO IOS commands to do that.

Good luck!

Client cannot renegotiate request and returns an HTTP 413 error

If client certificates are enabled on a Web server, Web site, or on individual directories or files on the site, clients might see an HTTP 413 error when uploading large files.

If a client sends a long HTTP request, for example, a POST request, to a Web server running IIS 6.0, the IIS worker process might receive enough data to parse request headers, but not receive the entire request entity body. When the IIS worker process detects that client certificates are required to return data to the client, IIS attempts to renegotiate the client connection. However, the client cannot renegotiate the connection because it is waiting to send the remaining request data to IIS.

If client renegotiation is requested, the request entity body must be preloaded using SSL preload. SSL preload will use the value of the UploadReadAheadSize metabase property, which is used for ISAPI extensions. However, if UploadReadAheadSize is smaller than the content length, an HTTP 413 error is returned, and the connection is closed to prevent deadlock. (Deadlock occurs because a client is waiting to complete sending a request entity, while the server is waiting for renegotiation to complete, but renegotiation requires that the client to be able to send data, which it cannot do).

The solution is to ensure that the client is not blocked from sending the entire entity body. To do so, change the value of UploadReadAheadSize to a value larger than the content length.

The following example shows how to set the value for UploadReadAheadSize to 64 KB on the Web server.

cscript adsutil.vbs set w3svc/1/uploadreadaheadsize 65536

Note: Setting the UploadReadAheadSize property above 64KB is not recommended for websites that do not require client certificate authentication, otherwise you run the risk of allowing an anonymous Denial of Service (DOS) attack. When UploadReadAheadSize needs to be set at a value higher than 64KB, it is recommended that you set the SSLAlwaysNegoClientCert property to True, which will require that the client has a valid client certificate installed.

For more information about UploadReadAheadSize, see UploadReadAheadSize Metabase Property.
